Wedding Photography FAQs
Keith & Avery | Vermont, New England & Destination Wedding Photographers
Choosing a wedding photographer is about more than finding beautiful photographs. It's about finding someone you trust to preserve the feeling of your wedding day, help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and recognize the moments you might otherwise miss.
I'm Keith, a Vermont-based wedding photographer working alongside my wife, Avery, to photograph celebrations throughout New England, New York City, and beyond. Our approach combines documentary wedding photography, editorial portraiture, medium-format and 35mm film, and digital photography to create imagery that feels both artful and honest.
Whether you're planning a luxury wedding at a Vermont estate, a destination celebration in the mountains, an elegant Hudson Valley wedding, or an intimate gathering in New York City, we want the experience of working together to feel every bit as thoughtful as the photographs themselves.
Here, you'll find answers to common questions about our wedding photography style, pricing, collections, film and digital photography, delivery timelines, and what it's like to work together.
-
Our wedding photography style blends documentary storytelling with editorial portraiture. We believe the most meaningful wedding galleries combine the moments that happen naturally with intentional, artfully composed photographs that make you feel something every time you return to them.
Documentary wedding photography allows us to preserve the genuine emotion, spontaneous interactions, and fleeting moments that give your celebration its character. Editorial wedding photography brings a more considered approach to composition, light, movement, and direction, creating portraits that feel elevated without feeling overly posed.
With experience photographing weddings, fashion, and celebrations in New York City and New England, we bring a refined eye and calm, intuitive presence to every wedding. Our goal is to create timeless wedding photographs that reflect not just how your day looked, but how it felt to be there.
-
Documentary wedding photography is about observing rather than directing. It's the embrace between old friends, the emotion during your ceremony, the unexpected laughter during dinner, and the little interactions that might otherwise go unnoticed. These photographs preserve the story as it unfolds.
Editorial wedding photography is more intentional. It considers the relationship between light, composition, styling, movement, and setting to create portraits with a refined, fashion-inspired sensibility.
As documentary and editorial wedding photographers, we move between these approaches throughout the day. We'll offer thoughtful direction when it helps create a beautiful portrait, then step back when the most meaningful thing is simply allowing a moment to happen. The result is a wedding gallery that feels natural, personal, and artfully considered.
-
Both. We combine 35mm film, medium-format film, and digital photography to create wedding galleries with depth, variety, and a distinctive visual character.
Film wedding photography offers a beautiful rendering of color, light, texture, and skin tones. Medium-format film is especially lovely for considered portraits and fine-art imagery, while 35mm film brings a more spontaneous, nostalgic quality to the story of the day.
Digital wedding photography gives us the flexibility, speed, and consistency needed to document fast-moving moments and changing lighting conditions. Rather than choosing one medium over another, we use film and digital together, allowing each to contribute something meaningful to the final collection.
For couples looking for a Vermont film wedding photographer or an editorial wedding photographer in New England, our approach brings the character of analog photography together with the versatility of digital storytelling.
-
You don't need to know how to pose, and you certainly don't need to feel like a model. Helping couples feel comfortable in front of the camera is an important part of our approach.
During couple portraits, we'll offer gentle direction on movement, positioning, and light so you can feel confident without worrying about what to do with your hands. We want you to connect with each other rather than focus on the camera.
For the rest of the wedding, we take a documentary approach, allowing genuine moments to unfold without unnecessary interruption. Our goal is to create natural wedding photographs that feel like you, with the thoughtful composition and refined aesthetic of editorial wedding photography.
-
For us, wedding photography isn't simply about an elaborate venue, beautiful details, or a particular aesthetic. It's about the care, experience, and attention that go into preserving a celebration that matters deeply to you.
Our background photographing weddings, fashion, and events in New York City and New England has taught us to work efficiently, adapt to changing timelines, recognize beautiful light, and remain calm when plans change. We bring that experience to every celebration, alongside a genuine investment in the people we're photographing.
We also believe the experience should feel personal. Before the wedding, we take time to understand your story, priorities, and vision. On the day itself, we balance a documentary eye with editorial direction, creating photographs that feel considered without making the celebration feel like a production.
The result is wedding photography grounded in expertise, kindness, and the belief that the most beautiful images come from understanding what makes your wedding uniquely yours.

My average investment for full-day wedding photography is $10,000–$15,000. The final investment depends on your celebration, the coverage you need, and the services that make the most sense for you.
Rather than expecting every couple to fit into the same package, I often build custom wedding photography collections around each couple's priorities. Your collection might include full-day coverage, a second photographer, an engagement session, film photography, or other additions based on what you actually want.
I don't believe you should pay for services you don't need. We'll take the time to understand what matters most to you and create a proposal that reflects your plans, priorities, and budget.
If you're comparing luxury wedding photographers in Vermont, New England, or New York, I'm always happy to explain what's included in a collection and help you determine the right fit.
-
Booking your wedding photography is a straightforward two-step process:
Sign the contract. Your agreement outlines the details of your wedding photography services.
Pay the nonrefundable retainer. Your date is reserved once both booking requirements are completed.
The best place to start is my contact page. Share your wedding date, venue or location, and a little about the celebration you're planning. I'll follow up to discuss availability, answer your questions, and help determine what kind of coverage will work best.
If you're searching for a Vermont wedding photographer, a New England wedding photographer, or a photographer for a destination wedding, I'd love to hear what you're planning.
-
I recommend reaching out as soon as your date and venue are confirmed, particularly if you're planning a summer or fall wedding in Vermont, the Hudson Valley, or another popular New England destination.
These seasons are especially beautiful for weddings in the Northeast, and dates can book well in advance. That said, if your wedding is coming up soon, you're always welcome to inquire. I'll let you know whether I'm available.
-
Yes. My wedding photography packages are flexible, and I frequently create custom collections based on exactly what couples want and need.
Some couples prioritize full-day wedding coverage and film photography. Others want to add an engagement session, include a second photographer, or extend coverage to additional events surrounding the wedding. Every celebration has different priorities, and your photography collection should reflect those differences.
I take time to understand what's important to you before recommending services. My goal is to leave no stone unturned when learning about your vision, so your investment goes toward the photographs and experiences that matter most.
-
Yes. Engagement photography sessions are available as an add-on or are included with select wedding photography packages.
An engagement session is a wonderful opportunity to become comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. It's also a chance for us to get to know each other, discover how you interact naturally, and create photographs that tell another part of your story.
We can plan a session around a meaningful location, beautiful natural light, and the atmosphere you love, whether that's a mountain landscape in Vermont, a quiet spot in New England, or the streets of New York City.
Because collections are customizable, we'll discuss whether an engagement session makes sense for your plans and how you'd like to use the photographs.
-
Yes. Avery's coverage is optional, and I recommend a second photographer for some larger weddings or when your photography priorities would benefit from having two perspectives documented simultaneously.
While I focus on the key moments and follow the couple throughout the day, Avery looks for the smaller stories and details that might otherwise be overlooked—or might never be seen at all if she weren't there to photograph them.
A second wedding photographer can be particularly valuable when both partners are getting ready in different locations, when multiple events happen at once, or when you want a broader view of your guests, family, and celebration.
We'll discuss your timeline, guest count, and priorities to determine whether adding a second photographer is worthwhile for your wedding.
-
The right amount of wedding photography coverage depends on the timeline, the events you want documented, and the kind of story you'd like your gallery to tell.
Some couples want coverage from getting ready through the reception and dancing. Others need additional time for a first look, multiple portrait locations, sunset photographs, or events surrounding the wedding day.
We'll work with you and your planner to create a realistic timeline that leaves room for the moments that matter without making photography the center of your celebration. The goal is to document your wedding comprehensively while allowing you to remain present and enjoy it.
-
Absolutely. A thoughtful timeline helps us make the most of the available light, coordinate important photographs, and leave space for the day to unfold naturally.
We'll discuss the timing of couple portraits, family photographs, the wedding party, ceremony, reception, and any sunset portraits you'd like. We'll also consider seasonal light in Vermont and New England, travel between locations, and the particular demands of your venue.
This planning is especially useful for editorial wedding portraits and film photography, where choosing the right light can make a meaningful difference. We collaborate with your planner and vendor team to ensure photography supports the experience rather than interrupting it.
-
You're not alone. Many of our couples tell us they feel awkward in front of the camera, and that's completely fine.
You don't need to arrive with posing experience or know how to behave in front of a lens. We'll help you settle in, offer direction when needed, and create opportunities for you to interact naturally with one another.
Getting to know our couples before the wedding is an important part of this process. By the time your wedding arrives, we want you to feel that you're spending the day with people you know and trust, not strangers directing every move.
-
Yes. A complete wedding photography gallery should tell the story of the entire celebration, from the details you carefully selected to the people and spontaneous moments that give the day its meaning.
We photograph ceremonies, family groupings, wedding party portraits, reception details, candid guest interactions, and the energy of the dance floor. We also pay attention to the atmosphere of your venue, the surrounding landscape, and the small moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
Before the wedding, we'll discuss your family photo list and the details most important to you. This helps us work efficiently while preserving room for genuine, unscripted moments.
-
We approach changing weather with flexibility and preparation. Rain and overcast skies are part of life in New England, and they don't mean you can't have beautiful wedding photographs.
We'll look for flattering available light, architectural details, covered outdoor spaces, and creative ways to work with the conditions. For outdoor weddings, we'll also coordinate with your planner to consider backup locations and alternatives in advance.
Our priority is to document your celebration thoughtfully and help you remain present in the experience, regardless of what the forecast brings.
-
We deliver approximately 100 edited photographs per hour of coverage in your full wedding gallery.
The final number depends on the length of coverage and the events, people, and moments that make up your celebration. Each image is selected and edited with the goal of telling a cohesive story rather than simply reaching a number.
Your full gallery includes the finished photographs from your wedding, including the film images created as part of your collection. Our goal is to provide a thoughtful record of the day that feels complete, personal, and true to your experience.
-
Your full wedding photography gallery will be delivered within eight weeks of your wedding date. You'll also receive a sneak peek gallery within 72 hours of the celebration.
The sneak peek includes approximately 15–25 of the strongest photographs, selected to begin telling the story of your day while the memories are so fresh. The sneak peek gallery is digital-only; film photographs are delivered as part of your complete gallery.
Your full gallery brings together the finished digital and film photographs in a carefully edited collection. We want you to have something beautiful to revisit and share while preserving the complete story of your celebration.
-
Yes. Your finished photographs are delivered through an online gallery, where you can view and download your images.
Your collection includes unlimited, perpetual personal print and digital rights. This means you can keep, share, and personally print your photographs without a time limit, subject to the terms of your agreement. Commercial use and other uses outside your personal rights may require separate permission.
We want your wedding photographs to be part of your life long after the celebration, whether you're sharing them with family, creating prints for your home, or building a personal archive of your favorite memories.
-
Yes. Wedding albums and fine-art prints offer a tangible way to experience your photographs beyond a digital gallery.
An album allows your wedding story to unfold as a carefully considered sequence, bringing together portraits, candid moments, meaningful details, and the atmosphere of the celebration. Fine-art prints allow favorite photographs to become part of your home and everyday life.
If you're interested in an album or printed photographs, we can discuss available options and how to create something that reflects your wedding and personal style.

Yes. Keith MacDonald Photography offers licensed and insured drone photography under FAA Part 107.
Aerial wedding photography can provide a distinctive perspective on your venue and surroundings, particularly for mountain weddings, lakeside celebrations, private estates, and properties with expansive grounds. Drone imagery can complement your documentary and editorial wedding photography by showing the setting in which your story unfolds.
Drone photography cannot be performed in rainy conditions, and certain restrictions apply based on proximity to airports and other airspace considerations. Availability depends on the location, weather, and applicable flight requirements. More detail can be provided on a case-by-case basis once we know your venue and plans.

Yes. Although we're based in Vermont, we photograph weddings throughout New England, New York, and destinations farther afield.
We love documenting celebrations in new places, whether that's a mountain wedding in Vermont, an elegant estate celebration in the Hudson Valley, a city wedding in New York, or a destination wedding somewhere entirely different.
Our approach remains the same wherever we travel: thoughtful preparation, a calm presence, documentary storytelling, and editorial imagery informed by the people, light, and surroundings of each celebration. Travel arrangements are tailored to your wedding and outlined in your proposal.

Yes. We love photographing celebrations where architecture, landscape, thoughtful design, and personal details come together to create a distinctive atmosphere.
From Vermont estates and mountain retreats to Hudson Valley properties, lakeside venues, coastal celebrations, and New York City settings, we approach each location with an eye for its particular light, character, and composition.
We also understand that a beautiful setting is only one part of the story. Our documentary approach ensures that the people, relationships, and unexpected moments remain central to the photographs.
If you're planning a wedding at a particular venue and want to discuss how we might photograph it, we'd be happy to learn more.
-
Absolutely. Love is love, and every couple deserves to feel respected, celebrated, and fully themselves in front of our cameras.
We welcome couples of all races, gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, and backgrounds. We approach every celebration with kindness, curiosity, and respect for the traditions, relationships, and values that make your wedding yours.
We believe that thoughtful wedding photography begins with seeing and understanding the people we're photographing. Our goal is to create an experience in which you can feel comfortable, supported, and confident that your story will be documented with care.
